Written by Carla Barrie (co-founder at Travel Universe) | Updated July 2026

Looking for the best carry-on luggage in Australia?

There is no single carry-on suitcase that will suit every traveller. A frequent business traveller may prioritise organisation and build quality, while a holidaymaker might prefer something lightweight and affordable.

Families, backpack travellers and people travelling with technology all have different requirements. That is why this guide does not rank the products from one to ten.

Instead, we have selected ten standout carry-on options for different travel styles, priorities and budgets. From lightweight hard-shell suitcases and premium business luggage to anti-theft backpacks and family-friendly ride-on cases, these are some of the best carry-on luggage options available in Australia in 2026.

How We Selected These Carry-Ons

Travel Universe has specialised in travel goods for Australian travellers since 2006. This guide was prepared by co-founder Carla Barrie using published product specifications, current airline baggage policies, warranty information and the practical questions customers ask when comparing carry-on luggage.

This is a specifications-led buying guide. We compared each product's published external dimensions, empty weight, packing capacity, materials, wheels, internal organisation, security features and warranty.

We also considered the questions Australian travellers ask most often: Will it fit? How heavy is it? Is it secure? Does it offer good value for the way I travel?

We have not conducted an identical hands-on packing test for every product, so we have not assigned artificial performance scores.

What Is the Best Carry-On Luggage Size in Australia?

A suitcase around 55cm high is commonly sold as carry-on luggage in Australia, but height is only one part of the calculation.

You must also check the width and depth, including the wheels, handles and any external pockets.

  • Qantas lists an overhead bag size of 56 × 36 × 23cm. Weight allowances vary by route and cabin.
  • Virgin Australia permits an Economy carry-on bag up to 56 × 36 × 23cm and 8kg, plus a personal item.
  • Jetstar Starter fares include one main item and one small item with a combined weight of 7kg. The main item must not exceed 56 × 36 × 23cm.

Linear dimensions are calculated by adding the suitcase’s height, width and depth. For example, 56 + 36 + 23 = 115 linear centimetres. However, meeting the total linear allowance does not necessarily mean the suitcase meets every individual measurement.

Some cabin-labelled bags exceed one or more of these limits. Always compare your suitcase with the allowance for your airline, fare and route.

Our tip: For airline sizing, the 55cm height includes the wheels.

What Makes a Good Carry-On Suitcase?

Empty weight

When travelling with a strict 7kg or 8kg allowance, every kilogram matters.

A carry-on weighing less than 3kg gives you more of your allowance for clothing, shoes and toiletries. However, heavier suitcases may offer additional organisation, stronger components or specialised features.

Our tip: The lightest case is not automatically the best choice.

Wheels

Four-wheel spinner luggage can be pushed upright, pulled behind or moved beside you. This generally makes it easier to manoeuvre through airport terminals.

Two-wheel upright suitcases use larger, recessed wheels and can be useful on uneven surfaces. They may also provide slightly more internal packing space because the wheels do not protrude as far from the base.

Hard shell versus Soft shell

Hard-shell carry-on luggage usually provides:

  • More structured protection
  • A stable exterior
  • Separate packing compartments
  • Easier exterior cleaning

Soft Shell carry-on luggage usually provides:

  • Exterior access pockets
  • More packing flexibility
  • A less rigid shape
  • Easier access to documents and small items

Neither is automatically better. It depends on what and how you pack.

Expandability

An expandable suitcase gives you additional packing space when required, but the expanded dimensions may exceed your airline's cabin limit.

Expansion is particularly useful for road trips, return journeys or occasions when you are prepared to check the suitcase in.

How to Choose the Best Carry-On Luggage for You

Which airline do you normally fly with?

Compare the complete height, width and depth of the suitcase with the airline's allowance. Do not rely on the 55cm height alone.

How strict is your weight allowance?

If you regularly fly with a 7kg allowance, a suitcase weighing 2kg leaves 5kg for your belongings. A 4.2kg case leaves only 2.8kg.

Do you need quick access?

Softside cases and front-opening luggage are generally better for reaching documents, laptops and small items without opening the entire suitcase.

What surfaces will you use it on?

Four-wheel spinners work well in airports and hotels. Larger two-wheel designs can perform better over uneven paths, carpet or outdoor surfaces.

Do you travel with a laptop?

Choose a suitcase or backpack with a dedicated padded compartment. Placing a laptop loose inside the main packing compartment provides less protection and makes security access more difficult.

Will you use the expansion?

Expansion is useful, but it may turn a carry-on-sized case into checked luggage. Check the expanded measurements before using it for a flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best carry-on luggage size in Australia?

A case around 55cm high is the most common choice. However, Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar publish a maximum main-bag envelope of 56 × 36 × 23cm for many services.

Always check all three measurements, including the wheels and handles.

Is every 55cm suitcase accepted as carry-on luggage?

No. Two suitcases may both be 55cm high but have different widths and depths.

Airline acceptance also depends on your route, fare, cabin and aircraft.

How much should a carry-on suitcase weigh?

For an airline with a 7kg or 8kg allowance, a suitcase under 3kg is a useful target because it leaves more weight for your belongings.

However, heavier cases may provide additional organisation, stronger construction or specialised family and business features.

What is the best carry-on luggage overall?

There is no single best option for every traveller.

The Samsonite OC2Lite offers a strong balance of weight, features and value, while the C-Lite suits travellers prioritising premium lightweight construction. The Victorinox Spectra 3.0 is designed for business travellers who value technology storage and detailed organisation, while Tosca offers a more affordable soft shell alternative.

The best choice depends on your budget, airline and travel style.

Is hard-shell or softside carry-on luggage better?

Hard-shell luggage provides a structured exterior and protection for fragile belongings. Softside luggage offers exterior pockets and more flexible packing.

Choose according to what you carry rather than assuming one type is always superior.

Are spinner wheels better than two wheels?

Spinner wheels are easier to manoeuvre through smooth airport terminals. Two-wheel luggage may be better on uneven surfaces and usually has wheels recessed into the case.

Can a 55cm carry-on hold enough for seven days?

It can, particularly for efficient packers using lightweight clothing and packing cubes.

Most travellers will find this size most comfortable for weekend trips, short business travel or approximately two to five days. Your airline's weight allowance may limit how much you can carry before the suitcase is physically full.

Planning a longer carry-on-only trip? Read our 7-Day Carry-On Packing List for a practical guide to packing for a week.
